MEET THE
EDITOR
Hello;
Welcome to Re\Center Magazine. Thanks for taking a little bit of time to engage with our content. Re\Center was dreamt up during various seasons in my personal life of yearning and trying to discover my purpose. Not an easy task for many of us, especially because throughout our lives we have so many interests and passions. It can be intimidating to narrow that life decision down. So how did I figure it out?
Well, let me tell you a little about myself first and then we can dive into those facts.
"I’ve always been passionate about storytelling, design, and social justice."
Due to my love of fashion my first decision was to become a fashion designer, and up until I was sixteen that was the trajectory I set for myself while I honed my skills. However, the fashion industry was intimidating and I felt extremely unprepared to enter that world. So, right before college, I changed my career route. I re-evaluated my passions and social justice and activism were right there. I received my degree in political science and planned to attend law school. While studying for the LSAT, I worked on various campaigns in Georgia such as Stacey Abrams for Governor (2018), and Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock’s first campaign in 2020. Outside of campaigns and my daily work, I am extremely vocal on issues that BIPOC and historically marginalized groups face.
So where does storytelling come into it? Well I often found myself on social media explaining research, opinions on issues, and current events. These topics ranged from sustainability in fashion and how that impacts our BIPOC communities, to various multidisciplinary artists, women’s health, and the list goes on.
"So, after toiling with the idea and getting over my own imposter syndrome,
I jumped headfirst into this business. It is also imperative that I mention that magazines
we're a crucial part of my life growing up. The rise of independent magazines
has been exciting to witness, and I'm thrilled to be apart of this movement."
I started Re\Center because the topics I’m discussing with friends and on social media are missing from a larger discussion throughout the nation. These stories and topics deserve to be read and discussed. In addition, these articles do not need to be packaged nicely or digestible for society. That is not reality, as writers and journalists it is our duty to document the times accurately.
So, now that you’ve learned a little about me. I hope you become a member of our community because without dialogue then progress sits at a standstill.
