8 Sports documentaries you need to watch

While we wait for the Paralympics to start on August 28th, we suggest you catch up on a few Sports documentaries about a few of your favorite athletes and a few you may not know, yet! 


  1. Simone Biles Rising

After the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, Simone Biles silences the noise and goes on a healing journey. Despite what many online and in the media have said, she knew the importance of mental health and with her family by her side she sets on a path to confront her past trauma. We also follow her journey back to Gymnastics. 


  1. In the Arena: Serena Williams

Serena is one of the greatest athletes of our lifetime. In this documentary, we get an in-depth account of her days playing and training under her sister Venus, and the crucial role her family has played in shaping her into the athlete she is today. The documentary takes us through her thought process behind her performance at various matches and behind the scenes of how she dealt with fame, grief, injuries, and success. In many ways, it also serves as a coming of age story from a young girl to a woman. We still have 2 episodes to go so catch up today. 


  1. Dream On (30 for 30 on ESPN)

The 1996 Olympics Team, accounts for the journey of the 1996 road to Gold. The success of this team would transcend women's basketball and pave way for the WNBA to be formed. This documentary follows the sacrifices the team made to ensure positive press as well as the scrutiny, sexism, and misogyny they faced.


  1. Heart of Invictus

This series produced by Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex, Megan Markle follows war veterans and their assimilation back into the civilian world with the support of the Invictus Games, family and community. Many of whom were injured and became disabled.

It follows current track and field stars as well as upcoming athletes in their pursuit of success. It details the way they dealt with media scrutiny and competition during the 2023 World Championships and the journey to the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games. 


  1. Under Pressure: The U.S. Women’s World Cup Team

The U.S. Women’s Team is going for a three-peat in the Women’s World Cup. This documentary chronicles their journey through the games and their devastating loss to Sweden.

Sue Bird is arguably one of the greatest point guards in the sport of basketball. In this documentary, we follow Sue Bird as she reflects on her career as well as her decision to retire from the WNBA. 


  1. Zion (Documentary Short)

Although it is only a twelve-minute documentary, Zion completely blows you away. Due to a rare disorder, he was born without legs and spent numerous years living in foster care. However, it is his competitive spirit and tenacity in wrestling that will impress you.
