The second night of the Democratic National Convention highlighted Democrats' economic plan and their dedication to the working class. Making a clear distinction between Vice President Harris's and Donald Trump’s plans.
Pennsylvania State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta kicked off this agenda by outlining the impact Project 2025 will have on the working class and healthcare.
In his speech, he spoke about how the plan could increase federal taxes for the working class, Medicare and prescription drugs, and even gut labor rights such as overtime pay. These are parts of the conservative plan that haven’t been touted as much as reproductive rights and civil rights issues but still greatly impact Americans as a whole. Especially marginalized groups that make up 45% of the working class.
Pro-Union White House
Union leaders Lee Saunders and April Verrett led the charge of how Vice President Harris has been an ally for union members. Having the backing of Unions will also play a pivotal role in Vice President Harris's connecting to a diverse minority electorate. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' most recent study, 11.8% of Union membership is held by Black union workers (the highest percentage of any group) followed by 9% by Hispanic workers, and 7.8% by Asian workers.
Senator Bernie Sanders highlighted the accomplishments of the Biden - Harris Administration as well as what he expects to accomplish with his party
Possibly the best Democrat to hammer home the message of an economy that works for the American people. He highlighted accomplishments the Administration and Congress provided during the height of the pandemic. Accomplishments such as the American Rescue Plan $1,400 stipend, extended benefits for the unemployed, rent relief and mortgage assistance, and Small business assistance. In regards to what he expects his party to accomplish, the Senator listed overturning the citizens' united decision, guaranteeing healthcare, raising the minimum wage, passing the PRO Act, and raising teacher's salaries.
Donald Trump is going to highlight the Biden-Harris administration downfalls and Democrats are using this convention to remind voters of the wins the Vice President has achieved as well as her plans for a Harris-Walz administration. There were also a few speeches highlighting the importance of a Democratic Congress from leaders like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Heading into night three of the convention there will be speeches from Maryland's Governor Wes Moore, New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, and President Bill Clinton. We can expect Democrats to continue making the case for a Harris-Walz Administration as well as what a Democratic Congress can accomplish.
