While working on this issue, I needed to keep my mindset focused on girlhood. So I truly engrossed myself in the meaning and I did so in various ways. Naturally, music was a big part of this process because of the significance it plays in our lives. Not only does it connect us, but it also gives insight into various opinions on a larger stage. The type of music artists make has proven to have a long-lasting impact on their fans. You can often hear me saying I grew up on certain songs and they played a big deal in how I view certain things. For example, Bills Bills Bills by Destiny’s Child. A classic, easily. The lyrics helped shape my views on how a woman should be treated in a healthy relationship, and what type of man I wanted to be with. Hearing this song as a young girl, along with reaffirmation from my mom and other women in my life molded my mindset.
So for this article, I decided to ask a few of my close friends and family members about songs from female artists either from childhood or recently that capture the essence of girlhood for them. What I love most about the responses is that they include classic girl anthems, carefree songs, songs about your girlfriends, relationships, and how we reject patriarchy.
Alexis: Schoolin Life by Beyoncé
“This song embodies the life cycle of a woman. It is a reminder that I am never alone in my womanhood. I am a product of the wonderful women who came before me, and I am exactly where I need to be.”
Sophie: Young Hearts Run Free by Candi Station
“I heard this song for the first time when I was hanging out with some friends and it made my heart so happy. Now every time I hear it, I get the same warm feeling!”
Kayla A: I’m That Girl by Beyoncé
“This song is THAT GIRL and makes you have all the feels of being that girl! The beat, energy in the song, and lyrics are unmatched making you feel and believe you are it!”
Kendyl: Ain’t My Fault by Sexxy Red
“I feel free listening to this because it doesn’t have any relation to my life but I wanna blast it flying down the freeway in the summer!”
Ashley: Church Girl by Beyoncé
I am going to let go of this body, I’m gone love on me nobody can judge me, but me I was born free.
"Every time I listen to this song I just embrace the beauty of being able to be comfortable in my own skin, and dance like no one is watching. If I did have people watching I could care less because this song just makes me so happy to express myself through dance.”
Khayla D: Daughter by Beyoncé
“Encompasses how I feel about my masculinity and big oldest daughter with a mean dad vibe, especially the best impression of a damsel in distress like my dad taught me how to be like him so it's hard pretending to be a girl that needs or even wants a man around.”
Ashley: Can’t Hold Us Down by Christina Aguilera ft Lil Kim
“Can’t Hold Us Down by Christina Aguilera is the perfect song about women standing up for ourselves, and not taking no disrespect or slander of any kind from a man. Being confident and knowing our worth.”
Kendyl: My Main by Mila J, Show Stopper by Danity Kane, Hot Girl Summer by Megan Thee Stallion ft. Nicki Minaj, Moment 4 Life by Nicki Minaj
“These songs give girl power, and I want to be surrounded by the baddest, prettiest most genuine people. Which are my girls!”
Kyla: Closer by Goapele
“She gives hope to the girlies who feel like they are in this life race alone. She reminds us that each day, and step we take may not always be pleasant, but we are getting closer to our goals and dreams. So we have to keep at it!”
Ashley: Pretty Girl Rock by Keri Hilson
“I was a senior in high school when the No Boys Allowed album came out. When I heard Pretty Girl Rock I instantly fell in love. In high school, so many girls compare themselves to others whether it is body shaming or appearance. I love how is song just embraces the beauty of loving yourself from the way you talk, dress, and feel. Just empowering self-confidence.”
