The Gift That Is Minority Organizing

By Alexis Shoats

After the news broke that Vice President Harris will run for President with support and endorsement from President Biden, many organizations have gotten behind Kamala Harris. This includes minority organizations that have immediately begun mobilizing. The night that Vice President Harris announced her intent to earn and win the Democratic Nomination, Win With Black Women held a Zoom to fundraise and discuss an organizing plan. The organization raised over 1.5 million dollars in just a few hours with 44,000 participants. The next day Win With Black Men decided to also host a Zoom call and raised 1.3 million dollars with 232,000 participants. This sparked more conversations online between other minority groups. Latinas for Harris in partnership with Chicago Latina Magazine also decided to host a call on Tuesday evening. The group even had Kamala Harris’s Campaign Manager Julie Chávez Rodríguez, and Michelle Villegas the National Latino Engagement Director on the call. South Asian Women for Harris intends to do the same thing this evening.

The magnitude of this moment is historic for the nation, and extremely important for minority communities. President Donald Trump has repeatedly throughout his presidency and his campaign targeted minorities in hopes of keeping far-right voters on his side. During his tirade, he has thrown racist statements around to invigorate his base, and although Trump has denied supporting the plan, he previously had numerous cosigners of Project 2025 in his administration. The plan touted by the far-right will roll back historic legislation and wins for minorities, women, and the LGBTQ+ community.

This has created outrage and fear amongst communities resulting in many becoming more politically engaged online. Outside of these organizations, minority voters who intend to vote for Vice President Harris have started voter education campaigns for their peers on platforms such as TikTok, X (formerly known as Twitter), and Instagram. Hoping to bring out massive groups of voters to defeat President Trump and conservatives.

This demonstration of resilience is a skill minority communities have utilized for generations. We’ve seen it before with the slave rebellions, the Civil Rights Movement, the Chicano Civil Rights Movement, the United Farm Workers Union, the Land Back Movement, and so many more. Organizing is a powerful tool, and minorities are one of the few groups that have mastered this skill. This level of organizing will be crucial for the Harris Campaign, and if Democrats pull off the unexpected in November they will have minorities to thank once again.
